Name: Seo-yeon Liu (劉서연) [pronounced Sigh-yuh-n]
Translated names, for when it’s necessary:
Hangul: 유 서연 (reading: Yu Seo-yeon)
Hanja/Kanji/Hanzi: 劉徐燃 (Chinese reading: Liu Xuran / Japanese reading: Is it Ryu Shonen? Ru Shozen? Ru Jonen? Ryu Jozen? KORO OMOMUROZEN? I DON’T KNOW. NOBODY KNOWS. EVERYONE IS CONFUSED ESPECIALLY ME
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Arcana: Chariot
Appearance:
Seo-yeon, or Seo (Sey-oh) as she’s used to being called by her English-speaking foreign friends (thank god for culturally inaccurate nicknames), is around 5’6 feet tall. Her build is solid and seems slightly stocky, owing to her rather small size, muscular arms, and thick thighs. She has a round, heart-shaped face, with lively amber-brown eyes, strong arching eyebrows, a short stubby nose, and a small, pert mouth often twisted in a smile. Her golden tanned skin is healthy and soft, except for the hard calluses on her hands. Her raven-black hair is cut in a long fringe over the right side of her face and kept short on the sides. When loose, her hair reaches just a little past shoulder-length, but she always wears it pinned on the back of her head with a green dragon barrette. She wears various print T-shirts (the white one with NEW YORK written on it in faded black lettering over a view of the city is an old favorite) underneath her usual black leather jacket, as well as a pair of old jeans and black combat boots, and silver stud earrings. She can also frequently be seen with her motorcycle helmet either on her head or hanging from her neck. Her eyeliner is done in a cat’s eye style and her lips are a bright almost-red. Small silver stars dangle from a thin silver chain around her left wrist.
Weapon Type: Tekko
Personality:
Seo-yeon is outgoing and social, fitting in easily anywhere. No matter where she goes, she quickly becomes popular, as her self-confident and daring attitude seems to draw people in (helped by her dashing good looks). She is both brave and thrill-seeking, and loves challenges. She does not shy away from the weird or unusual; she is one of those people who adapts effortlessly to any environment, without knowing home-sickness or fear. She is forceful, but not overly so. Her energy is palpable, but it isn’t the overexcited, full to bursting type: Seo instead seems to others like a steady and bright sun, dependable, competent, and friendly. In some ways, she is sometimes even intimidating to some. In high school, she was inevitably one of the Cool Kids, who went to all the Cool Kid parties, and who could wear ugly clothes to school and have people think she was cool and funny because it was ironic, instead of being laughed at.
Seo also loves fighting, in a move that made her entirely too Cool at an American high school. She gets extremely excited about getting into a good fight, and is an avid fan of boxing and various kinds of martial arts. Nothing makes her happier than a couple of bloody noses. It’s the one time she can get carried away, fighting in the streets when some gangsters pick a fight with her. She doesn’t mind getting beat up at all, and in fact tends to completely ignore her own injuries in order to secure her win. She will do absolutely anything to win, even use underhanded tactics if necessary.
Her competitive streak is present in everything she does, though it’s not nearly as strong when it doesn’t come to fighting. The one thing she absolutely cannot stand is losing. It makes her livid. It is when her immovable, mule-headed stubbornness rears its head the hardest. Though she hates to admit it, when she is denied what she wants she can be downright petty and immature. She is not a perfectionist: she needn’t be perfect, because nobody else is. Her unformulated life philosophy is something along the lines of what most shounen manga protagonists tote: though she may not be the best, she will aim for the best and try her hardest to get there, and act as though in complete assurance of her success at all times. That is why, though she of course cheerfully acknowledges the healthy benefits of having rivals, she harbours an undercurrent of resentment when having to think about them. She cannot forgive them for besting her. That is the unpleasant side of Seo: she loves challenges, but only when she wins them. Thankfully, she doesn’t hold grudges, and once she perceives that her own skill or position is no longer threatened, she can happily be friends with those former rivals again.
Seo dreams of greatness. She wants to be the best, not just in the way people are today in modern society, but in the olden days of heroes and legends. People say she is a daydreamer, and she laughs with them, but some part of her truly believes she can achieve that kind of out-of-this-realm, beyond-human glory, and deep down, she has always believed that she was destined for greatness. She is a terror at Risk.
Backstory:
Seo-yeon is half-Chinese on her mother’s side, half-Korean on her father’s. She was born in Seoul. She split her time between there and Suzhou, China, where her mother’s side of the family lives. When she was thirteen, she left to go study abroad in America. Recently, her mother received a promotion at work, but it involved moving the family to Osenjima, Japan. Though her father was reluctant at the idea of moving to Japan, Seo is always up for a new experience, and the idea of going from a bustling American metropolis to a backwater Japanese town where she barely speaks the language doesn’t faze her. Her father still plans on making frequent trips back to Korea. In truth, part of what motivated Seo to encourage her mother to make the move is all the things she’s read about Osenjima on the web: it seems to be a small, rural town full of strange happenings, just like in manga and games, which is an idea far too romantic and enticing for her to ignore. She has just set foot in Osenjima, her spirits ready for adventure.
